“Asthma: genes, environment and epigenes”
Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and is attributable in approximately equal measures to genetic and environmental factors. Large scale genetic studies have identified several genes whose strong effects appear concentrated in the epithelium. Studies of the airway microbiome show that the airway microbiome is consistently perturbed in children and adults with asthma. Epigenetic association studies that capture environmental effects on gene regulation identify novel pathways mediating atopy and IgE production in asthmatics.
