Seminar Series - Professor Maurice van Steensel

“Fish and Zits”
Genetic skin disorders, or genodermatoses, provide unparalleled opportunities to understand cutaneous biology. By showing what happens when a single gene is faulty, they offer unique windows into the complex genetic networks that underly the normal function and development of the skin and its appendages. In the past few years, I have been particularly interested in genodermatoses that cause abnormal growth and differentiation of sebaceous glands, leading either to tumour formation or to acne. Using a variety of tools ranging from three-dimensional culture to zebrafish models I have worked to understand these disorders with a view to identifying targets for therapeutic or preventive intervention. In my seminar, I will provide an overview of this fascinating journey and speculate on where it might go.
